Engine Repair at Johnny's Automotive
Misfires, oil leaks, rough idle, noises you have not heard before. We test to find the cause first, so you pay to fix the problem instead of guessing at it.
What is actually wrong with my engine?
Engine repair covers a lot of ground, and almost all of it starts with the same question: what is actually wrong? An engine that misfires, idles rough, burns oil, or makes a noise you have not heard before is telling you something. Our job is to read that correctly before anyone starts replacing parts.
So we diagnose first. That means pulling codes, but a code points at a system, not at a part. A misfire code on cylinder three tells us which cylinder, not whether the cause is a coil, a plug, an injector, a vacuum leak, or low compression in that hole. Fuel trims, compression, spark, vacuum, and watching what the engine does under load will separate those in a way a code reader on its own never can.
Oil leaks work the same way. Oil runs downhill before it drips, so where it lands is rarely where it came from. A valve cover gasket, a rear main seal, and an oil cooler line can all leave the same spot on your driveway, and they are three very different repairs. We clean the area, run the engine, and confirm the source before we quote anything.
Noises get sorted by where they come from and when they show up. A tick that only appears on a cold morning is a different conversation from a knock that gets louder with rpm, and the second one we want to look at sooner.
A couple of engine problems have their own diagnostic path and their own pages: head gaskets and timing components. If your symptoms point that direction, we will tell you and take it there.
Most engines that come through our bays get repaired, not replaced. Replacement only enters the conversation when the cost of the repair stops making sense against what the vehicle is worth to you, and that is a decision we walk through with you rather than make for you.

Problems we fix
Our experts diagnose and resolve any issue.
It shakes when I stop at a light
A misfire bad enough to feel at idle often smooths out at speed, which is why people live with it for months. The cause can be ignition, fuel, or a vacuum leak, and only testing tells those apart.
There is a spot on the driveway where I park
Oil travels along the block and the pan before it drips, so the puddle is a clue rather than an answer. We clean, run it, and trace the leak back to the actual gasket or seal.
The check engine light is on and it feels down on power
Lost power with a light usually means the computer is compensating for something it can measure. Reading live data while the engine is working is what narrows it down.
I hear a ticking that speeds up when I accelerate
A tick that follows engine speed points at the valvetrain, the injectors, or an exhaust leak at the manifold. Where it is loudest and whether it changes as the engine warms up shortens that list fast.
It goes through oil between changes
Oil either leaks out or gets burned through the engine. An external leak leaves evidence, and consumption with no leak points toward valve seals, rings, or a PCV problem.
It cranks longer than it used to before it starts
Long cranking is more often fuel pressure, ignition, or a sensor than a battery. It usually shows up cold or after the car has sat overnight, which is a useful clue on its own.

Can you tell me what is wrong over the phone?
We can usually tell you what is likely and what it is not, which helps you decide how urgent it is. What we will not do is name a part and a price sight unseen. Too many engine symptoms have four or five possible causes that only testing separates.
The light is on but the car drives fine. Do I have to fix it?
Not always, and we will tell you when it can wait. Some codes are emissions related and will only cost you at inspection time, while others mean the engine is running in a way that damages something else the longer you drive it. The point of diagnosing it is knowing which one you have.
What do I actually get to see?
We send a digital inspection to your phone with photos of what we found, so you are looking at your own engine instead of a line item on a page. If we tell you a gasket is weeping or a boot is split, you can see it yourself before you approve anything.
How does the diagnosis process work?
We talk through when the symptom happens, then run the testing that concern actually calls for. Before any of it starts, you will know what we are doing and you approve it. Diagnosis and repair are two separate decisions, and you are not committed to the second one by agreeing to the first.
Is the repair work covered by anything?
Yes. Repairs we perform carry a 36 month, 36,000 mile nationwide warranty, so it holds up whether you are home in Haines City or three states away. Our technicians are ASE certified, and we are happy to put the details of your coverage in writing with the estimate.
