100000 Mile Service at Johnny's Automotive

The milestone, and the decision point. Modern cars go far past 100,000 miles when they are looked after, so this visit is about planning the next hundred thousand.

Is 100,000 miles the beginning of the end for a car?

It used to be. It is not anymore. Maintained reasonably well, plenty of vehicles run well past 200,000 miles, and the ones that get there are almost never the ones that got lucky.

What changes after the milestone. Up to now, maintenance has mostly meant doing what the schedule listed. From here it shifts toward watching what ages. Rubber gets hard, hoses and bushings and seals give up slowly, the cooling system stops being new, and suspension parts that were merely worn at 60,000 start affecting how the car stops and steers. Most of that is gradual, which is why an inspection you can compare against last year's is worth more now than it was at 30,000.

Planning the second hundred thousand. We like to look at a car at this stage and answer two questions. What is likely to need money in the next year or two, and roughly in what order. Knowing that a water pump and a set of tires are on the horizon is very different from meeting both in the same week. It also lets you spread the cost, which is how most people actually keep a car this long.

Keep it or move on. Sometimes the honest answer is that a repair is not worth it, and we will say so. Far more often the math runs the other way, because a well kept vehicle with a known history and no monthly payment is a hard thing to replace for the price of the repair sitting in front of you. What we will not do is talk you into either answer. You will get what we found, what it costs, and what we would do if it were parked in our driveway.

Diagnostics

Problems we fix

Our experts diagnose and resolve any issue.

Rubber that aged out instead of wearing out

Hoses, belts, bushings and mounts fail on time as much as on mileage, and Florida heat runs that clock faster. A hose that looks fine can be hard and brittle, which is something you find by hand, not by eye.

Small leaks that have been small for a long time

Seeping seals and gaskets are common by now. Not all of them are worth chasing immediately. We will tell you which ones are cosmetic for the moment and which ones are heading somewhere expensive.

Suspension that is tired rather than broken

Nothing clunks, the car just floats a bit more and takes longer to settle. It shows up in tire wear and stopping distance before it ever shows up as a noise.

A cooling system still running original everything

Radiator, hoses, thermostat and water pump have all done the same hundred thousand miles. Heat is the main thing that ends otherwise healthy engines around here, so this is the system we look hardest at.

A warning light someone learned to live with

Cars this age often arrive with a light that has been on for a year and a story about it not mattering. Sometimes that is true. Either way it is worth knowing what the code actually is, because a lit dash hides the next problem.

FAQ

100000 Mile Service questions, answered

Common questions about our 100000 mile service services.

Is it worth putting money into a car with over 100,000 miles?

Usually yes, if the body is solid and the vehicle has been cared for. Compare the repair against what replacing the car costs you over the next few years, not against zero. Where that math genuinely fails, we will tell you, and we would rather lose the job than sell you work on a car we would walk away from.

How often should I bring it in from here?

Mileage matters less now and time matters more, so a regular inspection schedule beats waiting for the next round number on the odometer. For most drivers a look at least twice a year is enough to catch the aging items early. If something changes in how it drives, sooner.

Should I switch to a high mileage oil?

It can help if the engine is using or seeping a little oil, since those blends carry conditioners aimed at older seals. It is not a repair and it will not fix a real leak. Stay with the viscosity your manufacturer specifies either way.

What should I be watching for between visits?

Temperature gauge behavior, any new noise when you turn or brake, drips on the driveway, and how it starts on a hot afternoon. Those four cover most of what goes wrong at this age. Tell us what you noticed and where, it usually shortens the diagnosis.

When would you actually tell me to stop fixing it?

When the repairs stop being one thing at a time and start being everything at once, or when rust or a major failure costs more than the vehicle is worth to you. That conversation is a lot easier when you already know what is coming, which is the point of planning it out at this milestone.
