What do all the fluids in my car actually do?

Your vehicle runs on about half a dozen fluids, and every one of them has a different job and a different way of wearing out.

Engine oil lubricates moving parts and carries heat and combustion byproducts away. Coolant manages temperature and protects the metal in the cooling system from corrosion. Brake fluid turns your foot pressure into stopping force at the wheels. Transmission fluid lubricates and cools, and in an automatic it is also the hydraulic fluid that makes the shifts happen. Power steering fluid pushes the assist on vehicles that still use it. Differential and transfer case fluids carry gear loads on trucks and all wheel drive vehicles.

They do not wear out at the same rate or for the same reasons. Brake fluid pulls moisture out of the air. Coolant runs out of additive package long before it runs out of color. Transmission fluid cooks when it works hard, towing, hills, stop and go traffic in August. Engine oil takes on fuel and soot. A shop that services all of them on one calendar is guessing.

So we test first. On a service visit our ASE certified techs measure condition on the fluids that can be measured, check level, color, and smell on the rest, and send the digital inspection with photos to your phone so you see what we saw. If a fluid is still doing its job, we say so and we leave it alone. If it is not, we show you why and you decide what happens next.

That is how Brian and Johnny have run it since 2006: put the customer over the money. Work we do is backed by our 36 month, 36,000 mile nationwide warranty.

Transmission fluid and filter service is a bigger job than a fluid check, so we quote it as its own service rather than folding it in. And when you want to know how often something is due, your owner's manual is the authority. We will read it with you.

Problems we fix

Our experts diagnose and resolve any issue.

Every shop tells me a different fluid is due

Usually because they are reading a mileage chart instead of your vehicle. We check the fluid itself and tell you what the test showed, including the ones that came back fine.

I have no idea when anything was last changed

Very common, especially on a used vehicle with no records. Condition testing gets you an answer without the paperwork, because the fluid tells us how much life it has left.

Something smells burnt after I drive

A scorched smell often points at a fluid running hotter than it should, transmission fluid being the usual suspect. We check condition and look for the reason it is getting that hot.

There is a puddle under where I park

Color and location narrow it down fast. Losing fluid is a leak to find and repair, not a fluid change, so we trace the source before anyone talks about topping anything off.

The car shifts rough until it warms up

Cold shift quality can come from fluid that has broken down, but it can also come from a solenoid or a mechanical issue. We check the fluid and the shift behavior before recommending anything.

A quick lube place recommended four flushes

Bring us the list. We will test what they flagged and give you a straight read on which ones your vehicle actually needs right now and which ones can wait.

FAQ

Fluid Services questions, answered

Common questions about our fluid services services.

How do you decide whether a fluid needs to be changed?

By what the fluid measures, not by what the mileage chart says. Some fluids have a real test, moisture content or additive strength for example, and others get judged on level, color, and smell. Whatever we find, we show you the result before we recommend anything.

Do I have to do everything you find in one visit?

No. We will tell you what is genuinely due now, what is getting close, and what can wait until your next visit. If something is a safety item we will say so plainly, and otherwise the order is yours to pick.

Is there a mileage where I should just have all the fluids done?

There is not one number that works across vehicles, and anyone who gives you one is selling. Your owner's manual sets the intervals for your specific vehicle, and how you drive shifts them. Towing, short trips, and heat all shorten fluid life.

What is the difference between a flush and a drain and fill?

A drain and fill removes what will come out on its own and replaces it, so some old fluid stays in the system. A flush pushes new fluid through until the old fluid is out. Which one is right depends on the system and on what the manufacturer specifies for your vehicle.

Can you check my transmission fluid while I am there?

Yes, and it is part of what we look at. If the fluid is worn or the vehicle is not shifting the way it should, transmission work is a separate service and we will quote it separately rather than adding it onto something else.
