Transmission Fluid Service at Johnny's Automotive

Transmission fluid is hydraulic fluid, lubricant, and coolant all at once. We judge it on condition and on your manufacturer's spec, not on one mileage number.

How often does transmission fluid really need to be changed?

Transmission fluid holds down three jobs at once, which is more than any other fluid in your vehicle. In an automatic it's the hydraulic fluid that applies the clutches and makes a shift happen, it lubricates gears and bearings, and it carries heat out to the cooler. When it degrades, all three of those get worse together, which is why worn fluid can feel exactly like a mechanical problem.

Heat is what uses it up. Towing a trailer, hauling a load, and long stretches of stop and go traffic in August all push fluid temperature up, and heat is what breaks down the additives that make the fluid work. Two identical trucks can be a hundred thousand miles apart in fluid condition based on nothing but how they spent their lives. So we go by the condition of the fluid and by what your manufacturer schedules for your specific transmission, not by one number applied to everything in the parking lot.

That brings up drain and fill versus flush. A drain and fill replaces what comes out on its own, which leaves some old fluid in the system. A flush exchanges considerably more of it. Which one fits depends on your transmission and what the manufacturer specifies, and there's a third case worth saying out loud: on a very high mileage transmission that has gone a long time without service, changing everything at once is not automatically the safe choice. That's a judgment call we make with you, after looking at the fluid and at how the vehicle is behaving, rather than a rule we apply to every older truck that comes through the door.

The fluid spec is not a small detail. Many transmissions require one particular fluid, and the wrong one can cause shudder, poor shift quality, or damage. The same goes for the filter on transmissions that have a serviceable one. We use what your vehicle calls for, and we'll tell you exactly what went in it.

Why us

Why choose Johnny's Automotive for transmission fluid service

We are your trusted partner for all transmission fluid service needs.

Condition decides, not a sign in a window

We look at your fluid and at what your manufacturer schedules for your specific transmission. If it's still doing its job we'll tell you it can wait, which is not the answer that sells the most fluid services.

The high mileage question gets a real conversation

Whether to service a long neglected transmission is a judgment call about your vehicle, so we make it with you and explain what we're weighing. We won't hide behind a rule of thumb in either direction.

Your transmission gets the fluid it was engineered for

Our ASE certified technicians look up the specification for your vehicle and use it. Wrong fluid causes real problems, and saving a few dollars on a fluid that's close enough is not a trade worth making.

FAQ

Transmission Fluid Service questions, answered

Common questions about our transmission fluid service services.

Will changing the fluid on a high mileage transmission make it fail?

Not by itself, and it isn't the automatic rule some people treat it as. What we do consider is how many miles are on it, how long the fluid has gone, and how the transmission is behaving right now. If we think caution is warranted for your vehicle we'll say so and explain why, and the decision stays yours.

Does my transmission have a filter?

Some do and some don't, and on the ones that do it isn't always accessible without dropping the pan. We check what your vehicle has and include the filter when yours is serviceable. If it isn't, we'll tell you that rather than charge for a part your transmission doesn't use.

Can I just use a universal or multi vehicle fluid?

We'd rather not. Many transmissions are engineered around one specific fluid, and friction characteristics that are slightly off can show up as shudder or poor shift quality. Using what your manufacturer specifies costs a little more and removes a variable you don't want in there.

How do you check fluid condition if there's no dipstick?

Plenty of newer transmissions are sealed, so checking is done through a fill or check plug and often at a specific fluid temperature. It takes longer than pulling a dipstick, which is part of why sealed units get ignored. We follow the procedure your vehicle calls for.

Does towing really change how often this is due?

Yes, and most owner's manuals say so directly with a separate schedule for towing or severe use. Heat is the mechanism, and a loaded trailer generates a lot of it. If you tow, we work from that column rather than the normal one.
