Why does brake fluid need to be changed at all?
Brake fluid is hygroscopic, which is a technical way of saying it pulls moisture out of the air. It does not need a leak to do it. Water works in through the rubber flex lines, past the reservoir cap vent, and every time a cap comes off during a repair. It happens slowly, and it never stops.
Water matters because brakes work by heat. Every stop turns motion into heat at the rotor, and that heat soaks into the caliper and the fluid sitting inside it. Dry brake fluid boils at a high temperature. Add a small percentage of water and the boiling point drops hard. Fluid cannot be compressed, but steam can, so if the fluid boils you get a pedal that feels soft or sinks toward the floor at the exact moment you need it. Long grades, towing, and repeated hard stops are where it shows up.
The test takes a minute and you can watch it happen. We read moisture content as a percentage, and we can check the fluid's actual boiling point. That gives us a number and a spec to compare it to, which is a different thing than an opinion. If the reading is good, we tell you the fluid is fine and we move on.
When it is not fine, the service is a full replacement, not a top off. Fresh fluid gets pushed through each caliper or wheel cylinder in turn until clean fluid comes out, with the reservoir kept full the whole time so no air gets drawn into the system, then we bleed it out and check pedal feel before it leaves.
Type is not a detail. DOT 3, DOT 4, and DOT 5.1 are glycol based. DOT 5 is silicone and does not belong in a system built for the others. We use what your manufacturer specifies.
Brake fluid is the most skipped item on the maintenance schedule, because nothing looks wrong until the day it is.

The pedal feels soft or spongy
A pedal with give in it usually means something compressible is in the system, either air or vapor from fluid that has boiled. Worth checking soon rather than living with it.
The pedal sinks toward the floor on long hills
Sustained braking on a grade puts real heat into the fluid. If the pedal travels farther the longer the descent goes, moisture in the fluid is one of the first things to rule out.
My brakes fade after a few hard stops
Fade can come from pads, rotors, or fluid that is boiling at a lower temperature than it should. Testing the fluid separates the cheap fix from the expensive assumption.
The fluid in the reservoir looks dark
Dark fluid is a reason to test, not proof of anything by itself. Color comes from age and from rubber and copper picked up along the way, while moisture is the part that changes how the brakes behave.
No one has ever mentioned brake fluid to me
That is the normal story. It is not visible, it does not make noise, and it gets left off most quick service lists, which is why we check it as a matter of course.
The brake warning light came on
That light can mean low fluid level, which usually means worn pads or a leak, and neither one is fixed by adding fluid. Get it looked at before you drive it far.

It is hard to know where to begin when you are overwhelmed by professionalism and finding a garage with folks that care and listen. I can verify that the other reviews commenting on the inside of the “waiting room “for lack of a better term is unlike anything I have seen before. Snacks, relaxer chairs😉, television , the shops history listed on the wall … and best of all they’re honest. I brought in a 2016 Mercedes Metris with a breaking issue. I was genuinely concerned only because we had owned the vehicle for less than two months and it could have been anything. Usually…with any MB, anything that breaks = lots and lots of money to repair! The Mercedes-Benz dealerships were quoting us anywhere from two to $300 an hour just for a look and that that much an hour for labor! 😖 Their service departments are so overwhelmed and overbooked that one of them only had one mechanic for 76 Metris’s on site that needed repair. 😖Need I say more. So I looked online and saw the reviews on Johnny’s. From the first call … it was great!!! we drove down and the gal that took care of us and checked us in was wonderful. I sent them some additional potential recalls that may or may not have been relevant to the issue with my vehicle. Had I done that to another repair shop it probably would have been completely disregarded ignored and probably deleted . However, that was not the case here. Everything I found and texted to them wad was responded to with courtesy and a “thank you”.. wow! We were treated with good old-fashioned politeness that I haven’t seen or experienced in years to be totally honest. So now let’s talk about price. The initial problem could have possibly been would a small fortune to repair at a Mercedes-Benz shop. However, the issue they found was easily and quickly repaired, and I also had them do a preventative brake flush for the system as well. To get out of a shop with a Mercedes-Benz under $300 is rate these days. But Johnnys did it. I am extremely grateful. When I thought the reviews were too good to be true well guess what they’re not. They are true. So, if you have any issues at all before you spend a small fortune at a dealership charging anywhere from two to $300 an hour go to Johnny’s first. It was definitely worth the ride from Solivita.

What moisture reading is too high?
We go by the threshold the fluid manufacturer and your vehicle maker publish rather than a number we made up. We show you the reading next to that spec so you can see where your fluid sits. If it is borderline we will tell you it is borderline instead of rounding it up into a sale.
Can you just top off the reservoir instead?
Topping off does not help, because the water is already mixed into the fluid that is in the system. Adding a little fresh fluid to the reservoir barely changes that. It also hides the real reason the level dropped, which is normally pad wear or a leak.
Is DOT 4 an upgrade over DOT 3, and can I mix them?
They are different specifications, not a good better ranking, and the right one for you is whatever your manufacturer calls for. Casually mixing types is a bad habit even between compatible ones, since you end up with fluid that meets no published spec. DOT 5 is silicone and must never go into a system designed for glycol fluid.
Do you replace the fluid when I get new brake pads?
Not automatically, because it is a separate service with a separate reason behind it. We test the fluid while the brake work is being quoted, and if the reading says it is due we will tell you then so you can decide whether to do both at once.
My brakes feel fine, so why bother?
Fluid that has taken on moisture still stops the car normally in everyday driving. The difference shows up under heat, on a long descent or in an emergency stop, which is the worst possible time to find out. That is the whole argument for testing it rather than waiting for a symptom.
