How do I know when my engine air filter actually needs changing?

Your engine breathes. Every mile you drive it pulls air through the engine air filter, and that filter is the only thing between the road and your intake. Around Central Florida it earns its keep: sand off the shoulders, oak and pine pollen in spring, love bugs twice a year, and grove dust on the county roads.

We judge it by looking, not by mileage. Two cars with the same miles can have completely different filters depending on where they've been. A truck that runs dirt roads and a car that lives on 27 aren't the same job. So we pull the filter, hold it up to the light, and look at it. If it's loaded, you'll see it. If it still flows, it goes right back in and you don't pay for anything.

Show you, then let you decide. Our digital inspections put a photo of your actual filter on your phone, next to what a clean one looks like. You're looking at the same thing our ASE certified tech is looking at, and you make the call. No pressure, no counter theatrics.

The other filters in your car. Your oil filter gets replaced every time we do an oil service. That's part of the job, not an add on. Your cabin air filter is a different animal, since it filters the air you breathe instead of the air the engine breathes, and it has its own page.

Problems we fix

Our experts diagnose and resolve any issue.

Somebody waved a dirty filter at you at the counter

It's the oldest move in the business, and it's not always wrong. The fix is proof: you should see a clear photo of the filter that came out of your car, not a prop, and you should be able to see the difference yourself.

The car feels lazy when you get on the gas

A badly plugged filter restricts what the engine can pull in, and you can feel it on an on ramp or a hill. It's rarely the only cause, so we check the filter first because it's quick, then keep looking if it doesn't explain what you're feeling.

You drive dirt roads, groves, or construction

Grit and dust load a filter far faster than highway miles do. If your daily route is unpaved or dusty, your filter deserves a look more often than the owner's manual assumes.

Love bug season just wrapped up

Two seasons a year, bugs pack into the front of the car and some of it ends up in the airbox path. It's worth a look after a heavy stretch, especially if you've been running the interstate.

You have no idea when it was last done

Very common, and not a problem. We don't need service history to answer this one, we just need to open the box and look at what's in there.

FAQ

Auto Filter Replacement questions, answered

Common questions about our auto filter replacement services.

How often should the engine air filter be replaced?

There's no honest single number, because it depends entirely on where and how you drive. We look at yours during oil service and tell you what we see. A car that lives on paved highway can go a long while, and a truck on grove roads can load one up quickly.

Can I just knock the dirt out and reuse it?

Tapping loose debris out of the pleats is fine and sometimes buys you time. What you can't do is blow it out with shop air, since that drives dirt through the media and can open up holes you can't see. If it's dirty deep in the pleats, it's done.

Will a dirty air filter hurt my gas mileage?

On a modern engine you're more likely to feel it as soft throttle response than to see it on the pump, because the computer adjusts around a lot. The bigger reason to keep it clean is simply that it's what keeps grit out of your intake and cylinders. That's cheap protection.

Is the oil filter part of an oil change, or is that extra?

It's part of it. Every oil service we do includes a new oil filter, because putting fresh oil through an old filter defeats the purpose. You won't see it broken out as a surprise line item.
