Read the full jobHeat is harder on a battery than cold is. Cold weather gets the blame because that is when a weak battery finally refuses to start the car, but the damage usually happened months earlier, in July. Under the hood in Central Florida a battery spends most of the year at temperatures that speed up the chemistry inside it, evaporate fluid out of the cells, and build sulfate on the plates. Sulfate is the chalky layer that keeps a battery from accepting and holding a full charge. So a battery down here can look fine on a mild morning and still be well past its useful life.
Testing tells us more than age does. We load test the battery and watch what the voltage actually does under demand, check state of charge, and see how it behaves with the engine running and after the car has been sitting. Then we pull the terminals, clean the posts and clamps, and look at the white or green crust that quietly adds resistance to every circuit the battery feeds. A loose or corroded connection can act exactly like a dead battery, and it costs nothing to rule out.
Here is the part that saves people money. A battery that keeps dying is often not the problem. If the charging system is not putting voltage back in, a brand new battery will die the same way in a few weeks. If something in the car is drawing current after you shut it off, same result. So before we sell you a battery, we check charging output and look for a drain. Sometimes the answer really is a battery. Sometimes it is a charging or wiring issue, and a new battery would only have reset the clock on the same complaint. Either way you get the test numbers and the inspection photos on your phone, so you can see what we saw.

That is a battery that cannot hold enough charge to spin the engine at full speed. A load test tells us whether the battery itself is done or a high resistance connection is choking it.
A battery that drains while the car sits points at either a battery that no longer holds a charge overnight or something in the car still drawing current. Testing both separates them.
That is corrosion, and it adds resistance between the battery and everything it powers. Cleaning the posts and clamps sometimes clears up odd electrical complaints on its own.
New batteries do not usually fail on their own. Repeat deaths point at the charging system or a parasitic draw, which is why we check output and current draw before quoting another battery.
Heat and overcharging can push the sides of a case out. A swollen battery needs to come out, and we check charging voltage at the same time so the car does not cook the next one.

I needed a aux battery for my vehicle and Johnny's was able to get me in right away. I had been to the building when it was Ron's, boy has it changed. The place is immaculate. There is seating in the ac for waiting ,as well as a drink and munchies if you desire.The installation of my second battery didn't seen to take long at all,which means they know what they are doing as they are a pain in the butt to replace. The price was reasonable too. When I left there on my dashboard was a carnation. What a nice touch.I think they are going to be my go to.

I needed a new battery ASAP. Popped into Johnny's and was ready to go in about an hour. Price was quite reasonable .Rebecca was professional and knowlegeable. The shop waiting area is spacious, and free from fumes. Free coffee and snacks. And then there was a long stem coral colored rose on my dash when I left. That bit of extra that is so hard to find now.

I couldn’t get to Google reviews fast enough to leave my five star review and appreciation for Johnny’s Automotive. This locally owned business is spectacular place for you to go in and get automotive work done. Today I had my battery changed and my wipers changed. The facility is spotless. The staff is super friendly. It’s air condition inside and there’s coffee. There’s a nice place to sit. It is nicely decorated, and very customer service oriented. They have a text program that keeps you up-to-date on the status of your car. They go over the potential charges BEFORE they start the work. Everyone there is clean, professional, very approachable and friendly. And when you go back to your car, they leave a rose on your dashboard! And there’s no grease on my steering wheel or fingerprints on my gearshift or grease on my seats or anything like that. And my car doesn’t smell like a garage. How you feel and your loyalty obviously is extremely treasured by these people. It’s not that it’s important, they value it, they work for, and then they want to keep it! They’ve got mine! I have no issue driving from Lakeland to Lake Wales for car repairs and service. They are in Haines City and I think Winter haven and I think another one may open soon. They’re worth the drive. They’re worth any wait or extra effort you might have to put out to get to them. I want to thank Johnny’s very much for making this easy. When you’re going by yourself as a female to a repair shop, you have to be on guard and watchful to not ripped off. They are quite amazing! They have my loyalty in my future business. We load test it, which means putting real demand on it and watching whether voltage holds or falls off. We also check state of charge first, because a good battery that is simply run down will fail a test until it is charged. You get the numbers, not just a verdict.
Yes, and more than cold does. High under hood temperatures speed up the internal chemistry, drive fluid out of the cells, and encourage sulfate buildup on the plates. The failure usually shows up on the first cool morning, which is why people blame the cold.
If the battery tests good, absolutely. Corroded posts and clamps add resistance and can mimic a failing battery, so cleaning and re-torquing the connections is part of every battery check we do. If it fixes the complaint, that is the repair.
Some vehicles lose presets, clock and seat settings, or need a short relearn after power is disconnected. We keep memory alive during the swap when the vehicle calls for it and handle any relearns before you leave. If something needs to be set back up, we will tell you rather than let you find it in the parking lot.
A charge will get a weak battery going again, but if it failed a load test you are buying days, not months. It is also worth knowing why it went flat in the first place. If a charging fault or a drain put it there, charging the battery does nothing about the cause.
