Why Is My Car Losing Power with the Check Engine Light On?
The Problem
The vehicle owner noticed the check engine light was illuminated and experienced reduced power while driving.
What We Found
The technician conducted a diagnostic inspection and identified issues related to the vehicle's timing chain and coolant system.
The Fix
The team at our Lake Wales shop performed a timing chain replacement and conducted a complete coolant system flush. They used a BG machine to withdraw old fluids and refresh the system with new coolant, ensuring optimal engine performance.
The Result
After the repairs, the vehicle ran smoothly, and the check engine light was no longer illuminated.
Pro Tip
If your check engine light comes on and power is reduced, it could indicate a timing chain issue. Addressing it promptly can prevent more severe engine damage and keep repair costs lower.

Why Is My Coolant Overdue for Service?
The Problem
The vehicle was brought in for a routine oil change, but the technician discovered additional issues during inspection.
What We Found
The technician found that the vehicle's coolant system was overdue for service by 37,970 miles, and the coolant had become acidic, which could damage the water pump, radiator, and thermostat.
The Fix
The technician performed a BG Complete Coolant System Flush, using a specialized machine to withdraw and flush out all fluids from the engine and radiator. They then replenished the system with new, fortified coolant to ensure optimal performance and protection.
The Result
The vehicle's cooling system was restored to proper function, reducing the risk of damage to critical components.
Pro Tip
Coolant should be flushed every 30,000 miles to prevent it from becoming acidic and damaging your engine components. Keeping up with this service can save you from costly repairs down the line.

What Causes Sluggish Acceleration with a Check Engine Light?
The Problem
The vehicle owner noticed that the check engine light was on and the vehicle was sluggish to accelerate.
What We Found
The technician found that the #2 ignition coil had failed, three coil connectors were broken, and the spark plugs were fouled and incorrect for the vehicle.
The Fix
The team performed a tune-up, which included replacing the #2 ignition coil, the three broken coil connectors, and the incorrect spark plugs. They also conducted a basic inspection of related components and system functions to ensure everything was operating correctly.
The Result
After the repairs, the vehicle accelerated smoothly, and the check engine light was no longer illuminated.
Pro Tip
Sluggish acceleration can often be traced back to ignition coil issues. Replacing faulty coils and connectors promptly can prevent further engine performance problems and keep repair costs down.
What Lake Wales customers say about our preventive maintenance work
The BEST experience I have ever had with a car repair shop! Their customer service exceeded all expectations from the time I came in to explain my issues with my vehicle, to the timing of the inspection, and the estimate. They were ALL super friendly and professional! I would HIGHLY recommend this place to anyone in need of auto care because, they DO care! Oh, and I cannot forget the red roses in my steering wheel...nice touch, Johnny's!!! 😃

The guys Jeff and his assistant are wonderful. They are very knowledgeable and kept us informed of what was needed for our vehicle. We really felt like they cared about our car and treated us with respect as valued customers. They kept us informed of the status of our car without having to chase them down like at other mechanic/repair shops. In addition, Jeff and his staff even gave us a loaner car until the repairs were completed on our car. We will definitely come back for maintenance and any time we have car issues. This shop has been around for six years and is clean, have rest rooms, and snacks for their customers( which my husband loves to indulge ever time we visit). WE HIGHLY RECOMMEND BRINGING YOUR VEHICLE HERE!

Took my car to Johnny’s for regular maintenance, they were thorough, reasonable, and quick. Jeff was amazing, customer service was great, the facility is clean and not like any other shop I’ve been to. Highly recommended!

Very trustworthy. Prices are equal to or slightly less than what I would pay for the same maintenance or repair service at a dealership. However, the positive difference in the attitude of their customer people, and their efficient and immaculate business environment, their customer service amenities in the waiting room, and the overall verifiable, concrete evidence of a strong customer focus ethic - all go together to make Johnny's my maintenance and repair shop of choice, whether it is my 13-year-old car, or my 2-year-old's car. They make what could potentially be a very unpleasant experience, just the opposite. Kudos to the manager and all those who work there, from the mechanics to the customer service desk. Excellent place, staffed by people who take excellence seriously.

Preventive Maintenance in Lake Wales: questions answered
Answered by our licensed technicians serving Lake Wales.
How do I know what my car actually needs right now?
Give us the year, make, model, and mileage and we'll pull up the schedule your manufacturer published for that car. That tells us what's due by the book. The digital inspection tells us the rest, because a photo of your actual filter or fluid beats a guess every time.
Do I have to go to the dealer to keep my factory warranty?
No. You can have your scheduled maintenance done at an independent shop like ours without giving up your factory warranty. What matters is that the work follows the manufacturer's schedule and that you keep the records. We document what we did, when, and at what mileage, so you have the paperwork if anyone ever asks for it.
What is severe service, and does Florida driving count?
Most owner's manuals list two schedules, normal and severe. Severe covers short trips, stop and go traffic, heat, dust, and towing, and a lot of Central Florida driving lands in that column. It doesn't move every interval up, but it does move a few, and we'll point out which ones apply to how you actually drive.
Can you set up a maintenance schedule for me?
Yes. We'll build it off your manufacturer's intervals and how you use the car, then keep it in your file so each visit picks up where the last one left off. You'll know what's coming next and roughly when, instead of finding out at the counter.
What happens if you find something during a maintenance visit?
We photograph it, send it to your phone, and tell you whether it needs doing now or can wait. Plenty of things can wait, and we'd rather say that than sell you a service you don't need yet. Nothing gets done without you saying yes to it first.
