Why does my steering feel loose or wander?
The steering rack is what turns your input at the wheel into the front tires actually pointing somewhere. Inside the housing, a pinion gear on the end of the steering shaft rides on a toothed bar, the rack, and sliding that bar left or right pushes the inner tie rods, which push the outer tie rods, which turn the wheels. On a power steering vehicle, hydraulic pressure or an electric motor assists that movement so it takes a normal amount of effort.
Racks fail two ways. They wear internally, which you feel as play, a vague on center feel, a clunk over bumps, or steering that wanders and needs constant small corrections to hold a lane. Or they leak. On a hydraulic rack the internal seals let fluid past, and the first place it shows is the accordion boots at the inner tie rods, which fill with fluid and eventually sling it onto the subframe. A rack that has soaked its boots isn't a wait and see item, because once the fluid gets low the pump runs dry.
The honest part is that loose steering is not automatically a rack. Worn outer tie rod ends, a bad intermediate shaft coupling, a tired ball joint or a soft control arm bushing all feel similar from the driver's seat, and every one of them costs less than a rack. Some vehicles come in wandering and simply need an alignment. We check each piece on the lift and photograph the play in your digital inspection, so you can see what moves and what doesn't instead of taking our word for it. Alignment and suspension repair are their own services, and sometimes that's the entire answer.
When the rack does need replacing, an alignment afterward isn't optional. Pulling the rack changes toe on both front wheels, and skipping that step will chew the inside edges off a new set of tires in a hurry. Rack work we perform is covered by our 36 month, 36,000 mile nationwide warranty.

Problems we fix
Our experts diagnose and resolve any issue.
The steering feels loose or vague on center
There's play somewhere between the wheel and the tires. It can be internal rack wear, but worn tie rod ends and a loose steering shaft coupling feel much the same from the seat.
The car wanders and I'm always correcting it
Slop in the steering or suspension, or an alignment that has drifted. Which one it is decides whether this is a small repair or a rack.
A clunk from the front over bumps
Often internal rack movement or worn bushings letting something shift when the suspension cycles. We can usually reproduce it on the lift and show you the source.
Power steering fluid keeps going down
On a hydraulic system the rack seals are a common source, and the fluid collects in the inner tie rod boots before it drips anywhere you'd see it in the driveway.
The front tires are wearing unevenly
Steering slop lets toe change while you drive, which scrubs the tires. Fixing the loose component and then aligning it is what actually stops the wear.
Steering is heavy or notchy turning one direction
Binding inside the rack, or an assist problem on that side of the system. Worth checking soon, since effort that changes mid turn tends to get worse.

Common questions about our rack and pinion replacement.
Can a leaking rack be resealed instead of replaced?
On most modern vehicles, no. The seals are inside a sealed assembly and the labor to open it up and reseal it usually exceeds the cost of a quality replacement unit, with a shorter life afterward. We'll tell you if yours is one of the exceptions.
Do I really need an alignment after the rack is replaced?
Yes, and we won't hand the car back without one. Taking the rack out changes toe on both front wheels, so even a perfect installation leaves the alignment off. Driving it that way wears the inside edges of your front tires quickly, which costs more than the alignment did.
Would new tie rods fix it instead of a whole rack?
Sometimes, and that's exactly what we check first. Outer tie rod ends wear out on their own and produce a very similar feel for a fraction of the cost. We'll show you the photos of where the play actually is so the decision is based on what we found, not on a guess.
Is it safe to drive with a loose steering rack?
Mild play that we've inspected and documented is usually fine for a short while, and we'll tell you plainly if that's your situation. What we don't want you driving on is a rack that's leaking badly enough to run the system low, or one with movement in the mounts. Those we'd rather see soon.
New rack or remanufactured?
Both are legitimate, and it depends on your vehicle and how long you plan to keep it. A quality remanufactured unit saves money and is a sound choice on many cars, while some applications have a poor reman track record and we'd steer you to new. We'll quote what we'd install on our own vehicle and explain why.
