The steering rack is what turns your input at the wheel into the front tires actually pointing somewhere. Inside the housing, a pinion gear on the end of the steering shaft rides on a toothed bar, the rack, and sliding that bar left or right pushes the inner tie rods, which push the outer tie rods, which turn the wheels. On a power steering vehicle, hydraulic pressure or an electric motor assists that movement so it takes a normal amount of effort.

Racks fail two ways. They wear internally, which you feel as play, a vague on center feel, a clunk over bumps, or steering that wanders and needs constant small corrections to hold a lane. Or they leak. On a hydraulic rack the internal seals let fluid past, and the first place it shows is the accordion boots at the inner tie rods, which fill with fluid and eventually sling it onto the subframe. A rack that has soaked its boots isn't a wait and see item, because once the fluid gets low the pump runs dry.

The honest part is that loose steering is not automatically a rack. Worn outer tie rod ends, a bad intermediate shaft coupling, a tired ball joint or a soft control arm bushing all feel similar from the driver's seat, and every one of them costs less than a rack. Some vehicles come in wandering and simply need an alignment. We check each piece on the lift and photograph the play in your digital inspection, so you can see what moves and what doesn't instead of taking our word for it. Alignment and suspension repair are their own services, and sometimes that's the entire answer.

When the rack does need replacing, an alignment afterward isn't optional. Pulling the rack changes toe on both front wheels, and skipping that step will chew the inside edges off a new set of tires in a hurry. Rack work we perform is covered by our 36 month, 36,000 mile nationwide warranty.
