Seasonal Tire Change in Winter Haven: what you need to know

There's no snow season here, so for most of our customers this isn't a service they'll ever need. It exists for two specific groups, and if you're not one of them, you can skip this page with our blessing.

The first group is the two-home crowd. If you keep a winter set for the drive north and an all-season or summer set for down here, somebody has to change them over twice a year. We handle that around your travel dates, before you head out and again when you get back.

How the swap goes depends on how your spare set is stored. If the winter tires are already mounted on their own wheels, it's a straight changeover: four wheels off, four wheels on, lug nuts torqued to spec, pressures set, TPMS sorted. It's quicker and it's easier on the tires. If you have only the tires and one set of wheels, each tire has to be broken off the rim and its partner mounted and balanced in its place, twice every year. That's more labor and more handling of the bead and the sealing surface, which is why a lot of seasonal drivers eventually buy a second set of wheels and stop thinking about it.

The second group is seasonal residents whose vehicle sits for half the year. Sitting is harder on tires than driving is. The weight of the car resting on one patch of tread for months can leave flat spots you feel as a shimmy for the first few miles. Air seeps out slowly whether the car moves or not, and an underinflated tire baking in Florida heat takes the worst of both. Our sun and humidity also work on the rubber the entire time, so a tire with plenty of tread can still need looking at on age and condition alone.

So when you come back and the car's been parked since spring, bring it by before you start running errands on it. We'll set pressures, go over the tires, and tell you plainly what we see.

FAQ

Seasonal Tire Change in Winter Haven: questions answered

Answered by our licensed technicians serving Winter Haven.

What's the right way to store the set that's off the car?

Clean and dry, out of direct sun, away from anything running an electric motor, and somewhere that stays as cool as a Florida garage can. Tires mounted on wheels do best stacked flat or hung; loose tires stand upright. Ask us when you drop the car off and we'll walk you through what works with the space you've got.

Do flat spots from sitting go away on their own?

Usually, yes. Most flat spots round back out within the first few miles as the tires flex and warm up. If you can still feel the vibration after the tires are warm, that points to a balance issue or something in the suspension rather than a flat spot, and we should look at it.

Should I put the car on jack stands while it's parked for the season?

For a normal few months away, it isn't necessary. Setting the tires to the pressure on the door placard and moving the vehicle a short distance every few weeks handles most of it. For a vehicle stored a year or more, or one that won't be moved at all, taking the weight off the tires is worth a conversation.

Is a second set of wheels actually worth the money?

If you're swapping twice a year, usually. Mounted sets go on and off much faster, and you stop putting the tire bead and the wheel sealing surface through a mount and dismount every six months. We'll price both ways so you can see where the crossover lands for your vehicle.

What does a pre-season check include before I drive back north?

We set pressures to the placard, look over tread depth, wear patterns, sidewall condition, and age on all five tires including the spare, and check that everything is torqued properly. Our technicians are ASE certified, and the work we do carries a 36 month, 36,000 mile nationwide warranty, which is worth something when you're about to be a long way from Haines City.
