TPMS and ABS Lights Came On at the Same Time
What the customer reported
The vehicle owner reported that the TPMS light and ABS light came on at the same time and that the tire pressures should be ok. Another shop had said via scan that it could be a tire sensor or the wheel speed sensors, so the owner asked our Lake Wales shop to verify, check and advise.
What we found and did
The technician found that both front ABS wheel speed sensors had failed, which was the reason for the ABS light. At our Lake Wales shop, the technician removed and replaced components as required to access and install the new sensors, then planned to retest and verify the repair, with a final road test where applicable.

Can I just ignore the TPMS light?
You can drive with it on, but you're driving blind on pressure from then on. That's a bad trade in a state where summer heat and long highway runs are already hard on underinflated tires.
How long do TPMS sensors last?
Years, but not forever. The battery is sealed in the sensor and it runs down over time, and they usually start failing one at a time as a set gets older. There's no way to know the exact day, so we test them rather than guess.
Can the battery in a sensor be replaced?
No. It's sealed inside a molded housing, so replacing a dead sensor means a new sensor, not a new battery. Anyone who tells you otherwise is describing something these parts don't do.
Do I need new sensors every time I buy tires?
No. Working sensors go right back in. What does get replaced at mounting is the service kit: the seals, grommet, and valve hardware around the sensor, since reusing those is how a slow leak starts.
Why does the system need a relearn?
The car has to know which sensor is at which corner, and that mapping changes when wheels move or sensors are replaced. The procedure differs by make and model, and some vehicles handle it on their own after a short drive.
