Why do my wipers start streaking again after just a few months?

Wiper rubber has a rough life in Florida. It bakes on the glass in parking lots all summer, then gets asked to work overtime the second the afternoon storms roll in. Heat hardens the rubber and the edge splits, and once that edge is gone the blade stops wiping and starts smearing.

What worn blades look like. Streaks that are still there after two or three passes. Chatter, that skipping squeak across the glass. A strip right in your line of sight that never quite clears. Rubber pulling loose from the frame at one end.

This one you can check yourself. Blades are one of the few things on a car you can judge without a lift or a scan tool. Lift the arm and run a finger down the rubber edge. Smooth and flexible means you're fine. Ragged, hard, or split means it's done. We'd rather you know how to check than have to take our word for it, and if yours are still good we'll tell you that and move on to whatever you actually came in for.

We check the washers at the same time. Blades and washers do the same job together, so we look at the fluid level and make sure both nozzles spray where they're supposed to. A clogged or misaimed nozzle will make brand new blades look bad. It takes a minute and it comes with the work.

Clear glass is just easier driving, especially in a July downpour on the way home.

Problems we fix

Our experts diagnose and resolve any issue.

Streaks left behind after every pass

The rubber edge has hardened or split, so instead of squeegeeing the water off it drags a film across the glass. Running the wipers more just spreads it around.

Chattering and squeaking across the windshield

That skip and shudder usually means the rubber has taken a set and isn't flexing over properly as it changes direction. Sometimes it's the blade, sometimes it's a film on the glass, and cleaning the windshield tells you which.

One band right in your view never clears

A nick or a worn spot in the rubber leaves the same untouched strip every single pass, and it's always in the most annoying place. That one is a replacement, not a cleaning.

The rubber is torn or flapping loose

Once the rubber separates from the frame you can end up with metal touching glass, which scratches. Worth handling before the next storm rather than after.

Washer fluid sprays weak, crooked, or not at all

Usually a low reservoir or a nozzle clogged with wax and road film. It's a quick fix, and it makes a bigger difference in bug season than most people expect.

FAQ

Wiper Blade Replacement questions, answered

Common questions about our wiper blade replacement services.

How long do wiper blades last in Florida?

Less than they would somewhere milder, because sun and heat are what kill the rubber, not the wiping itself. There's no number we'd stand behind for every car, so we go by what the edge feels like. A car that parks in a garage will get more life out of a set than one that sits in a lot all day.

Do I have to replace both blades at once?

Not as a rule, but they usually wear at about the same rate since they've lived in the same sun. If one is shot the other is often close behind. We'll tell you if only one really needs doing.

I just put new blades on and they still streak. What gives?

Most of the time it's the windshield, not the blade. Wax, bug residue, and road film leave a slick layer that new rubber can't cut through. Cleaning the glass properly usually solves it, and if it doesn't, something is off with the blade or the arm pressure.

Do you replace the rear wiper too?

Yes, and it's the one people forget about. Rear blades on SUVs, wagons, and hatchbacks sit exposed to the sun all day and often go bad long before the fronts do. Ask and we'll take a look at it while the car's here.
