Power Steering Fluid Service at our Wauchula shop

Fair question, and on a lot of newer vehicles the answer is no. Electric power steering uses a motor on the column or the rack and has no hydraulic fluid at all. Nothing to check, nothing to change, nothing to sell. Plenty of drivers have paid for a power steering flush on a vehicle that does not have a drop of it in it. We will tell you which type you have, and if yours is electric, that is the end of the conversation.

If your vehicle is hydraulic, there is a pump, a reservoir, hoses, and a rack or gearbox. The pump pushes fluid under high pressure, and that fluid does the actual work of turning the wheels while you park and maneuver. It also lubricates the pump. That pump runs the entire time the engine runs, so the fluid takes a beating from heat, pressure, and thousands of hours of shear.

What we look at is condition. Fresh fluid is clear, red, or amber depending on the type. Old fluid goes brown or nearly black and smells scorched, and it carries fine metal worn off the pump and the seals. That grit is abrasive, and circulating it is how a fluid problem turns into a pump or rack problem. We check level, look at color and smell, check the reservoir screen for debris, and put the photos on your digital inspection so you are looking at the same thing we are.

Worth mentioning to us: a whine or groan that rises as you turn, especially at idle or in a parking lot, steering that feels heavy or notchy, or a shudder in the wheel at full lock. Low or degraded fluid can cause all three.

We should be straight about the limit, though. Fresh fluid does not fix a leaking rack or a worn out pump. If the fluid is dark because a component is on its way out, we will say so, and rack and pinion replacement is its own job with its own quote.
