What Causes a Loud Noise When Driving at All Speeds?

The Problem

The vehicle was towed into the shop due to a loud noise occurring while driving at all speeds.

What We Found

The technician found that the noise was due to worn control arms, a faulty strut assembly, bent rear sway bar links, and severely worn brake pads and tires.

The Fix

The team replaced the front lower control arm with ball joint, the rear upper control arm, and the front strut assembly. They also replaced the bent rear sway bar links. For safety, they mounted and installed two new rear tires and replaced the front brake pads and rotors.

The Result

After completing the repairs, the vehicle was road-tested and the noise was eliminated.

Pro Tip

If you hear a loud noise while driving, it could be a suspension issue. Address it promptly to prevent further damage and ensure your safety on the road.

FAQ

Suspension Noise Diagnosis in Lake Wales: questions answered

Answered by our licensed technicians serving Lake Wales.

Can I just send you a video of the noise instead of coming in?

Send it, absolutely, it makes the visit faster. Roll the windows up, turn off the radio and the fan, and say out loud what speed you are doing and what the road is like. A video will not replace putting the car on a lift, but it often tells us which corner to start on.

Why does the noise disappear when the car is up on the lift?

Because most suspension parts stop making noise the moment they are unloaded and hanging free. Joints and bushings need the weight of the car on them to move the way they do on the road. That is why we load the suspension during the inspection instead of just grabbing at things in the air.

Could this be my exhaust and not the suspension at all?

It happens more often than you would think. A broken hanger or a loose heat shield rattles over bumps in a way that sounds like it is coming from a strut. It is on our list every time, and it is a very good day when that is the answer.

Does a clunk mean something is about to fall apart?

Usually not, but the range is wide enough that it is worth identifying. A sway bar link makes a lot of noise and does very little harm. A worn ball joint makes less noise and matters far more. We would rather name the part than have you sit at home ranking your own worst case.

Do I need to know which corner it is coming from?

It helps, but do not lose sleep over it. Sound bounces around the floor of a car and a lot of people point at the wrong wheel, which is completely normal. Tell us what you noticed and we will confirm it under the car.
