Almost nobody books an appointment for belts and hoses. They get found. Somebody comes in for an oil change or a brake job, the hood is already up, and a technician notices a hose that's gone hard where it meets the clamp, or a belt with fine cracks running across the ribs. Then it becomes a conversation.
That's worth knowing ahead of time, because the rubber under your hood is the shortest-lived material on the car, and Central Florida is hard on it. Here's the tour: what's down there, what each piece does, what you can check yourself with the engine cold, and what happens to your day if one lets go.
The full cast, in plain words
The serpentine belt. One long ribbed belt on the front of the engine that drives several things at once: the alternator, the power steering pump, the air conditioning compressor, and on many engines the water pump too. The timing belt, or the timing chain. Hidden behind a cover, keeping the top half of the engine in step with the bottom half. Some engines use a rubber belt that comes off on a schedule, others a metal chain designed to go much longer. Which one you have was decided when the engine was designed, not by how you maintain it.
The upper and lower radiator hoses. The two thick ones. The upper carries hot coolant out to the radiator, the lower brings the cooled coolant back. These are the ones most people picture when they hear "burst hose."
The heater hoses. A smaller pair running to the heater core behind your dash, which is where your cabin heat and defroster come from. They carry the same coolant, so a leak back there is a cooling system leak, sometimes with a damp passenger floor and a foggy windshield.
The small stuff. Bypass hoses, throttle body and oil cooler lines, the hose to the coolant overflow bottle. Short, thin, easy to overlook, and carrying the same fluid under the same pressure as everything else.
Why rubber ages faster here
Rubber doesn't wear out the way a brake pad does. It ages. Three things drive that, and Central Florida supplies all three generously.
Heat cycles. Every drive takes the engine bay from ambient up to operating temperature and back down, and that expansion and contraction is what slowly stiffens a hose and hardens a belt. Our ambient starts higher and stays higher most of the year, so the hot end of that cycle sits closer to the material's limit more of the time.
Ozone and sunlight. Ozone attacks rubber at the surface, which is where the fine cracking you can see comes from. Anything sitting exposed at the top of the engine bay, on a car that lives outside rather than in a garage, gets more of it.
Oil contamination. A weeping valve cover gasket puts oil on a belt, and oil softens and swells rubber from the outside in. A belt sitting in oil residue ages faster than an identical dry one.
Which leads to the part that surprises people: on belts and hoses, age counts for more than the odometer. A truck with modest miles that sat in a Frostproof driveway through several summers can have harder, older rubber than a daily commuter with double the mileage. It's why "it barely has any miles on it" isn't the reassurance it sounds like.
The five-minute check you can do yourself
Engine cold, engine off. If you drove it in the last couple of hours, wait. A cooling system holds pressure while it's hot, and opening a cap or squeezing a pressurized hose is how people get burned. Cold and off is the whole rule.
On the belt, just look. You're checking the ribbed side of the serpentine belt for three things: cracks running across the ribs, chunks missing or fraying along the edges, and a hard glossy shine on the rib faces where there should be a dull texture. Rib depth takes a gauge to judge properly. Spotting something is enough. Grading it isn't your job.
On the hoses, squeeze. Take a radiator hose in your hand and give it a firm squeeze. A healthy hose feels firm but springy: there's some give, and it pushes back when you let go. Three things say otherwise. Rock hard with almost no give. Mushy and soft, collapsing too easily. Or swollen and puffy, especially near a clamp. That's where heat concentrates and where hoses usually go first, so squeeze there specifically, not just in the middle.
Look for crust. Dried coolant leaves a chalky residue at connections, white or green or orange or pink depending on what's in the system. It's the fingerprint of a leak that's been evaporating off a hot engine before it ever reaches the ground. No puddle, still a leak. While you're there, check the overflow bottle against the marks on the side.
What a failure actually costs you
A snapped serpentine belt. Several things quit at the same moment. The battery light comes on because the alternator stopped charging, the steering takes real effort, the AC goes warm, and if that belt was also turning the water pump, the temperature starts climbing right away.
The honest advice is boring: get somewhere safe, shut the engine off, and call for a tow. The car will move for a little while on battery power, and doing that turns a belt into an alternator, a battery, and sometimes an overheated engine. A tow costs less than any of those.
A burst hose. Coolant leaves quickly and the temperature gauge climbs in minutes, not miles. Same instruction: pull over, shut it off, don't try to make the next exit. Heat is what damages an engine, and it happens fast once there's no coolant left to carry it away. Leave the radiator cap alone while everything's hot.
A slow seep. This is the version you want. A hose weeping at a clamp, or a level that drops a little between oil changes, is a small repair caught early. Most of the failures above started here and just didn't get looked at.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know how old my belts and hoses are if I don't have records?
Most hoses carry a molded date code, and belts often have manufacturing markings, so a technician can often tell whether a part is original to the vehicle or was replaced at some point. Beyond that, condition tells the story: original rubber on an older vehicle looks and feels different from a newer replacement. Ask us to check next time it's on the lift.
Does a coolant leak always leave a puddle in the driveway?
No, and that's what makes slow leaks easy to miss. Coolant seeping onto a hot engine often evaporates before it ever hits the ground, leaving only a dried crusty residue at the connection. A coolant level that keeps dropping with nothing visible under the car is a real symptom, not your imagination.
If one hose fails, should I replace them all at the same time?
Sometimes yes, sometimes no, and it comes down to what the others look like. Hoses on the same vehicle age under similar conditions, so if one has gone hard the rest are often close behind and doing them together saves a second visit. But if the others still squeeze firm and springy, replacing them is spending money on parts that are fine. We'll show you the photos and let condition decide.
Can I keep driving if I just top off the coolant every week?
Topping off treats the symptom and leaves the cause running. A leak losing a little coolant slowly can become one losing a lot quickly, usually without warning, and that's the scenario that damages engines. Finding where it's going is usually a quick job, and if you're already topping off on a schedule it's worth having someone look.
Is it worth having belts and hoses checked before a long drive?
It's one of the better times to ask. Sustained highway running keeps the engine bay hot for hours at a stretch, which is exactly the condition that finds marginal rubber. A look at the belt and a squeeze test takes a few minutes, and knowing it's solid before you leave beats sorting it out somewhere you don't know anybody.
