Whine, howl, or clunk from underneath? We find out whether it's gears, bearings, or a seal, and we count towing and boat ramp life as the real wear they are.

What is a differential, and what does it sound like when it's going bad?

Your differential is the gearbox that takes power turning one direction and sends it out to the wheels turning another, while letting the outside wheel spin faster than the inside one through a turn. That's the whole job. It sits in a case full of gear oil, it carries every bit of torque the engine makes, and most owners never think about it until it starts making noise.

Rear wheel drive cars and trucks have one at the back. All wheel drive and four wheel drive vehicles typically have a front and a rear, plus a transfer case or a center unit moving power between them. Front wheel drive cars have the differential built into the transaxle alongside the transmission, so it isn't a separate piece of hardware. If you drive a truck, tow anything, or run four wheel drive, you have parts under there worth paying attention to.

Differentials tend to talk before they fail. A whine that rises and falls with vehicle speed, and not with engine speed or gear, usually points at gear or bearing wear. A howl that only shows up when you lift off the throttle points at how the gears are loading against each other. A clunk when you turn or when you pull away from a stop can be worn spider gears, a limited slip clutch pack, or something looser in the driveline entirely. Diagnosis here is largely about telling those apart, and about ruling out tires and wheel bearings, which imitate a differential noise convincingly.

Two things around here wear this hardware faster than the odometer suggests. Towing loads the gears and bearings hard and drives oil temperature up. Backing a trailer down a boat ramp puts a hot axle housing into the water, and as it cools it can pull moisture past a tired seal. We inspect for leaks, play, and contamination, tell you what the noise actually is, and back the work with our 36 month, 36,000 mile nationwide warranty.

Why us

Why choose Johnny's Automotive for differential repair

We are your trusted partner for all differential repair needs.

We identify the noise before anything comes apart

Rear end noises get blamed on the differential all the time when the cause is a tire, a wheel bearing, or a u-joint. Isolating it first is what keeps you from paying for the wrong repair.

Towing and ramp life count as real wear here

Plenty of trucks in Haines City, Lake Wales, and Sebring tow trailers and back down boat ramps, and both of those are harder on a differential than the mileage suggests. We ask how you use the vehicle because it changes what we look for.

Gear setup is done to specification, not by feel

Backlash and the contact pattern decide whether a differential is quiet and whether it lasts. Our ASE certified technicians set them to the manufacturer's numbers rather than close enough.

FAQ

Differential Repair questions, answered

Common questions about our differential repair services.

How do you tell a differential noise from a tire or wheel bearing?

All three change with vehicle speed, which is why they get confused so often. We listen for whether the noise responds to load, to coasting, or to turning, and we inspect the tires and bearings directly. Plenty of noises that get blamed on the rear end turn out to be a worn tire pattern.

Is a small leak at the pinion seal urgent?

It's not an emergency, but it's not something to watch for a year either. Gear oil is what keeps the bearings alive, and there's no warning light to tell you when the level gets low. A seal is a modest repair, and the failure it prevents is not.

Can worn gears be repaired, or does the whole unit get replaced?

It depends on what's worn and how far it went. Bearings and seals are routinely serviced, and a ring and pinion can be replaced as a set with the backlash and pattern set to specification. Once the housing or the carrier is damaged, replacing the unit is often the better value.

Should I stop driving it if it's whining?

Tell us what the noise is doing and we'll give you a straight answer. A light whine that's been there a while is usually not a reason to park the truck immediately. A noise that got loud fast, or one that comes with a leak, is different, because bearing failure can take out more than the bearing.

Do you work on all wheel drive systems too?

Yes, front and rear differentials plus the transfer case or center unit, depending on how your vehicle is set up. All wheel drive systems are less forgiving of mismatched tires and neglected fluid than most owners expect. We check the whole driveline rather than one end of it.
