CV Axle Replacement at Johnny's Automotive

Clicking on tight turns usually means a CV joint that's been running on dirty grease. Caught at the boot it's a small job. Caught later it's a whole axle.

What is that clicking when I turn the wheel all the way?

A CV axle is what delivers power to a front or all wheel drive wheel while that wheel is steering and moving up and down at the same time. The constant velocity joints on each end let the shaft keep turning smoothly through big angles, which is a harder trick than it sounds like. Each joint is packed with grease and sealed behind a ribbed rubber boot.

The boot is almost always the real story. It cracks or tears, grease slings out onto the inside of the wheel, and road grit and water get in. From that moment the joint is grinding itself down on dirty grease, and the clock starts. A torn boot caught early is a boot. The same tear found a year later is an axle. That's the whole reason we look at them during an inspection instead of waiting for the noise.

The classic symptom is clicking or popping on full lock turns, the sound you hear backing out of a parking spot with the wheel turned all the way over. It's usually louder turning in the direction that loads the bad side. An inner joint announces itself differently, as a clunk when you get on or off the throttle, or a shudder under acceleration that disappears when you coast.

On the parts question we'll be straight with you. Remanufactured axles cost less and plenty of them are perfectly good, but quality varies more between suppliers than most people expect, and a poor one comes back as a vibration or a boot that splits early. We pick the axle we'd be willing to put on our own vehicles, and we tell you what we're quoting and why, rather than quietly buying the cheapest one on the shelf.

Why us

Why choose Johnny's Automotive for cv axle replacement

We are your trusted partner for all cv axle replacement needs.

We choose the axle, not just the price

Remanufactured axle quality is genuinely uneven, so this is a part where the supplier matters. We put on what we'd run on our own cars and tell you what you're getting.

Backed by a 36 month, 36,000 mile nationwide warranty

Since axle quality varies, coverage matters more here than on most parts. Ours is 36 months or 36,000 miles and it's honored nationwide, not just at the shop that installed it.

ASE certified technicians who catch boots early

Our ASE certified techs check boots whenever a vehicle is on the lift, because a five minute look is what keeps a torn boot from turning into a worn out joint.

FAQ

CV Axle Replacement questions, answered

Common questions about our cv axle replacement services.

Can you just replace the boot instead of the whole axle?

Sometimes, and when we can we will. If the boot is freshly torn and the joint still feels tight and clean inside, reboot and repack is a real repair, not a shortcut. Once the joint has been running on grit it's already worn, and a new boot over a damaged joint just hides the problem for a while.

The noise only happens turning one way. Does that mean one side is bad?

Usually, yes. Turning loads the outer joint on the outside of the corner, so a joint that's noisy turning left is typically the right side and the other way around. We confirm it on the lift before quoting so you're not paying for the wrong side.

Will a clicking axle leave me stranded?

Not out of nowhere. A clicking joint normally gets louder over weeks or months before it gives up, so you have some room to plan the repair. We'd rather you knew that than felt rushed into it, though a joint that has started clunking hard is one we'd want to handle soon.

My vehicle is all wheel drive. Is it the same job?

The principle is identical, and all wheel drive vehicles have axles at the back too, which people often forget about. Rear boots tear the same way and get overlooked because nobody hears clicking from back there. We check all four when the vehicle is up.
