A timing chain does the same job as a timing belt, keeping the crankshaft and camshafts in sync, but it runs inside the engine, bathed in oil, and it is built to last a great deal longer. That is where a common misunderstanding starts. Longer is not forever. Chains are not a scheduled replacement item, but they are not a lifetime part either, and on higher mileage engines they are one of the more common sources of the noise owners describe as a rattle.

What wears out is usually not the chain breaking. Chains stretch, which really means the pins and rollers wear until the chain is effectively longer than it started, and that pulls cam timing off by a few degrees. The plastic guides that hold the chain on its path wear grooves into themselves and can crack. The tensioner that takes up the slack is hydraulic on most engines, so it depends on oil pressure and clean oil to do its job at all.

That is why chain wear and oil habits are connected. Stretched out oil change intervals, running low on oil, or oil that has turned to sludge all shorten the life of the guides and the tensioner. On an engine known for using a little oil between changes, keeping the level topped up is the cheapest chain maintenance there is.

The classic symptom is a rattle for the first second or two after a cold start, before oil pressure has built and the tensioner has taken up the slack. Left alone long enough, timing drifts far enough that the computer notices and sets a correlation code between the crankshaft and camshaft sensors. We verify with a scan tool, look at the actual cam timing data, and inspect before quoting anything, because a rattle at startup can also come from an accessory belt tensioner or a loose exhaust shield, and those are much smaller repairs.
