A code is a starting point, not an answer. When that light comes on, the computer has seen a reading outside the range it expects and stored a code for it. The code names the system involved. It doesn't name the broken part. One code can have five believable causes sitting behind it, and the only honest way to tell them apart is to test.
Steady or flashing matters. A steady light means the computer wants someone to look at it, and you can usually finish your errands and get it scheduled. A flashing light means the engine is misfiring right now and unburned fuel is heading into the exhaust. If it is flashing, pull over when it is safe and have the car towed or looked at before you drive it further.
Diagnosis starts with every stored code plus the freeze frame data that came with it, so we can see what the engine was doing at the moment the light triggered. Then we watch live data with the engine running. Fuel trims show whether the computer is adding or pulling fuel to cover for something. Sensor readings get compared against what the engine is actually doing. From there our ASE certified techs test the specific suspects, which is how a failing sensor gets separated from a vacuum leak or a wiring problem instead of replacing parts in order until the light goes out.
Some codes have nothing to do with how the car drives. Evaporative emissions codes are the usual example: the car feels perfectly normal while fuel vapor quietly leaks away. Sometimes it really is a loose or worn gas cap, and we'll tell you that. Often the cap is fine and a smoke test finds the leak somewhere else in the fuel vapor system.
You leave knowing the actual cause, with inspection photos on your phone and a written quote. Whether you fix it that day is a separate decision.

They took it back almost immediately, diagnosed it for $140, and gave us two estimates on what it will cost to repair. We’ve decided to bring it back next week to have the work done by them as they offer a 3 year/ 36k warranty, and the man was very helpful and extremely knowledgeable. I wish we would have taken my husband’s Cadillac there before we ended up trading it in due too to many expensive issues.

Johnny’s in Lake Wales was great!! Sahra listened to what was going on with the Jeep and the technicians were able to diagnose the problem and fix it. We will definitely go back there!! Hopefully only for routine maintenance.

I had my 2014 Jeep grand Cherokee in for an oil leak. Jerry quickly diagnosed the problem. Scheduled appointment for the following day. I dropped the Jeep off with Kevin and Sarah stated they would give me an update later that day. I received a call that my jeep was finished. I came in and when I picked up the jeep, the bill was a little lower than they had originally quoted. It was a great experience for me and I would definitely recommend them to all my friends!

My Jeep started acting up on Tuesday 12/05/23 on my way home from work almost got stranded out in the middle of nowhere. Called Johns the next morning and they got me in on Thursday 12/07/23 first thing. I got a call back with in a couple of hours with a text detailed report with pictures showing what was wrong. Also gave me a report as to what should be done over the next 3-6 months to avoid huge repair cost on the future. As my Jeep is getting close to 100.000 miles. Once additional work completed the tech said I will have a great running safe vehicle. The problem that almost got Mr stranded was key SAFETY things the dealership missed on its 120 point inspection when I took it in for a oil change 2 weeks ago. At Nissan Hill and previous break work done at Tuffy's in July, They missed rear bearings we shot. I will no longer take my vehicles to a dealerships or other place, I will only be dealing with Johnny's in Lake Wales from now on..for my Jeep and my wife Nissan.. Once work is completed on my Jeep we taking my Wife Nissan in for inspection to see what the dealership may have missed on her car so we don't run in to this issue of things missed and the end up with huge repair bill in the thousands. The very nice young lady at the front desk. Gave me single rose for me to give my wife. To help her feel better because of other places not doing there job this a costly repairs. My wife just lite up and got very teary eyed and smiled. They make you feel like family the moment you walk in the door. They don't rush you and help you find a way to do repairs in states as long they (Johnny's) knows the vehicle will be safe on the road.. And with the distance I drive for work. The tech said for your safety these list of things has to be done others we could probably do in stages but not to far apart. Jeff & Jennifer.
