Some transmission failures are repairable and some are not, and the honest work is finding out which one you have before you spend money. A solenoid, a valve body, a leaking seal, or a broken mount is a repair. Metal debris packed into the pan, a burnt clutch pack, a failed pump, or damaged hard parts is a different conversation, because failures like those have already put contamination through the rest of the unit.

When a transmission is genuinely finished, you have two honest paths and they carry different risk. A remanufactured unit has been torn down, machined, and rebuilt to a specification with new wear parts, and it comes with coverage from the builder. A used unit came out of another vehicle with a history nobody can fully verify, and it usually carries much shorter coverage. Remanufactured costs more and lowers your risk. Used costs less and raises it. What tips the decision is usually not the car, it's your plan for it. Two more years of driving and a used unit can be exactly right. Ten more years and it rarely is.

A proper installation is more than swapping the unit. Whatever contaminated the old fluid is still sitting in the cooler and the lines, so those get flushed or replaced or the new transmission inherits the debris. Mounts get inspected, because a broken one lets the driveline move in ways it was never meant to. The unit gets the exact fluid it specifies and the correct fill procedure, and most modern vehicles need the control module programmed or relearned so the engine and transmission agree on what they're doing.
