We don't get there by ruling everything else out and shrugging. The accessible half of the system gets inspected and pressure tested first, then we put an electronic detector right at the drain tube and inside the vents with the blower shut off, since anything escaping from the case has to come out one of those two places. UV dye goes in when the leak is slow, and we bring the car back under a light after it's had time to mark itself.

On most vehicles, yes, at least partially. The evaporator sits inside the HVAC case behind the dash, and that case is built around the core, so reaching it means the instrument panel and often the steering column come out first. A few vehicles allow access through a service panel, and we'll tell you if yours is one of the lucky ones.

Sometimes, and it's worth trying before anything bigger. A fresh cabin filter, a clear drain and treating the case can take care of a smell that's just accumulated moisture. When the smell keeps coming back and the system is also losing refrigerant, those two things are usually the same problem, and cleaning it again won't fix it.

Not in any way we'd stand behind. These cores are thin aluminum with dozens of tubes, sealed inside a case, and a leak usually means the material has corroded rather than been damaged in one spot. Sealer products aimed at that problem tend to circulate and plug the small passages the system needs, which is a worse outcome than the leak.

It's worth asking, and the answer depends on the vehicle. On many cars the heater core sits in the same case, so if it's showing its age this is the one time replacing it costs mostly parts instead of labor. Blend door actuators and a blower that's getting noisy are in the same category. We'll show you what we can see in there and let you decide.
