Nobody thinks about their car's air conditioning until the first miserable week of the year. Then it's the only system in the vehicle that matters.
We've covered the diagnostic side elsewhere. This one is about what the system is doing when it works, why Florida asks more of it than most places, and the habits that make a real difference over a car's life.
Your AC doesn't make cold, it moves heat
No machine makes cold. Cold is just what's left when heat leaves. Your car's AC is a heat-moving machine, and refrigerant is the conveyor belt that carries the load.
Here's the loop in plain words. Refrigerant passes through the evaporator behind your dash, where it absorbs heat from the cabin air blowing across it. That warm refrigerant gets compressed and pushed to the condenser up front, where it dumps the heat into the outside air. Then it goes back for another load, over and over, all the way to Sebring and back.
That one idea explains almost every AC symptom you'll ever have. If the air isn't cold, the belt stopped somewhere. Either there isn't enough refrigerant on it, or it isn't moving, or it's moving fine but can't pick up or drop off its load because air isn't flowing where it needs to.
Florida runs the system at the top of its range
Four things stack up here.
The air outside is already hot. The condenser sheds heat by being hotter than the air around it, and the smaller that gap, the harder it is to get rid of anything. On a mild day a healthy system coasts. In August it works near the edge of what it was designed for, which is exactly when a small weakness stops being invisible.
Your interior is a heat battery. A car parked in a lot all afternoon isn't just full of hot air. The dash, seats, and glass have soaked up heat and are radiating it back. The AC isn't cooling a room, it's cooling a room that keeps making its own heat for several minutes.
Traffic takes away the condenser's airflow. At highway speed, air gets forced through the condenser whether you like it or not. Sitting at a light on US 27, the only thing moving air across it is the cooling fan. Anything weak in the fan, the fins, or the charge shows itself in stop-and-go traffic first.
There's no off-season. In much of the country an AC system works a few months a year. Here it's most of them, which means more hours on the compressor and more chances for a slow leak to matter.
Humidity is the load nobody counts
Air holds water, and cooling humid air means wringing that water out before you get much temperature drop. That work is real and it costs capacity.
So on a sticky morning, a real share of what your AC is doing is drying the cabin rather than chilling it. You experience that as "the AC seems weak today," even though nothing about the car changed since yesterday.
The same vehicle can honestly feel different on two days that read the same on a thermometer, and once the cabin dries out, comfort catches up. Give it a few minutes on a humid day before deciding something is wrong.
The first minute matters more than the next twenty
A car that's been sitting in the sun is dramatically hotter inside than out. Climbing in and asking the AC to fix that immediately is asking a system sized for a cabin to empty an oven.
The cheapest improvement available costs nothing. Drop the windows for the first minute of driving with the fan up and let the bulk of that hot air leave the way it came in. Then close up and let the AC work on what's left. You get comfortable sooner, and the system spends less time at the top of its range.
Switch to recirculate once the cabin is close to where you want it. Recirculating cools air you already cooled instead of pulling in fresh hot, humid air, which is less work for the same result. Fresh air first, recirculate after.
Park in shade when you can. A windshield shade earns its keep in a Central Florida parking lot, and it's less about comfort than about how often you ask the system to do its hardest job.
Habits that keep the system healthy
Run the AC year round. The compressor has seals, and they stay in good shape because oil circulates with the refrigerant. A system that sits untouched for months is one whose seals dry out. Most vehicles engage the compressor on defrost, so using defrost on cool mornings handles it for you.
Keep the cabin air filter fresh. Airflow is half of comfort. A plugged filter makes a perfectly healthy system feel weak, because cold air that can't get past it never reaches you. One of the cheapest parts on a car, and one of the most forgotten.
Don't live on max cold at the lowest fan speed. Low airflow across a very cold evaporator lets condensation freeze on it. Ice blocks airflow, so you get less cold air from a system working harder. If the vents weaken the longer you drive, then recover after the AC has been off a while, mention that pattern.
The puddle under your car is supposed to be there
Clear water dripping under the passenger side after running the AC is the system doing exactly what it should. It's condensation the evaporator pulled out of your cabin air, draining where it belongs. On a humid day there can be a surprising amount of it.
Clear and odorless is condensation. Colored or sweet-smelling is coolant, a different conversation. And water on the passenger floor mat instead of under the car means the drain is backed up, which is worth a visit.
About that can of refrigerant at the parts store
Those cans are sold everywhere, they're legal, and sometimes they do put cold air back for a while. We'd rather tell you what they can and can't do than pretend they don't exist.
The gauge on the can tells you very little. It reads a single point, and what it reads depends on outside temperature, humidity, and engine speed as much as on how much refrigerant is in there. A number that looks fine can sit on top of a real problem.
Overcharging causes damage, and it's easy to do. Too much refrigerant raises pressures, makes cooling worse rather than better, and loads the compressor beyond what it was built for. Undoing it means recovering the whole charge and starting over.
Sealant cans travel the whole loop. Sealant hardens where it meets air and moisture, which is the leak, but it doesn't only go there. It can set up in the expansion valve, in condenser passages, and in the recovery equipment at whatever shop sees the car next. Many shops test for it before connecting anything, and a car that has it costs more to service.
Refrigerant isn't a consumable. The system is sealed, so it isn't burned off the way fuel or oil is. If a car is low, the refrigerant left through an opening, and that opening is still there. Adding more without finding it just sets the date for the same conversation.
When it's time to bring it in
Come see us when the cold doesn't catch up after a humid day has had its few minutes, when it's clearly weaker than last summer, when it changes with driving conditions, when you hear something new as the compressor engages, or when there's water inside the car. If you're not sure which of those you've got, AC diagnosis exists because the symptom rarely names the cause.

Frequently asked questions
Does refrigerant get used up over time?
No. The AC is a sealed loop, and refrigerant is meant to circulate for the life of the system rather than get consumed. If a car is low, it escaped somewhere. Topping it off without finding the leak buys time rather than fixing anything.
Should my AC be serviced on a schedule like an oil change?
There generally isn't a published mileage interval for recharging AC, so there's no number to chase. What's worth doing on a rhythm is the cabin air filter, plus noticing how the system performs compared to last year. A gradual decline is easier to sort out than a total failure.
Should I run the AC during the cooler months?
Yes, at least once in a while. Circulating oil keeps the compressor seals from drying out, and a system left idle for a long stretch is likelier to leak at those seals. Most vehicles engage the compressor on defrost, so using defrost on a damp morning covers it.
Is it worth checking out if the AC still blows somewhat cold?
Usually yes, and partial cooling is easier to work with than none. A system that still runs can be watched while it runs, which tells us more than one that's already quit. Waiting until it quits entirely often means the compressor spent a long time working harder than it should have.
